My Company fuses a lot of plastic (1-6" dia.) and maintains a number of heaters. I have a couple of questions. I understand the thermometer indicates internal temperature and is for reference only. Our contractor indicates the heater thermometers are often inaccurate. What kind of inaccuracy should be allowed before considering sending heaters in for thermometer replacement? This would be very expensive and time consuming. Can these thermometers be adjusted or calibrated? Thanks, Don

The thermometers in the heaters are for reference only. They do read internal temperature but will give you a good indication that the heater is up to temperature and working properly. You should always use a pyrometer to check the actual surface temperature prior to making a fusion joint. Most of the time the temperature shouldn't differ more than 25 degrees from your pyrometer reading.
The thermometers cannot be re-calibrated or adjusted. However, they are very easy to replace and replacement parts can be purchased from your local distributor. Check the following link for a distributor in your area:
The most common problem with these thermometers is mechanical damage. If you have any that have been cracked or bent, I would recommend replacing them. You simply need to unscrew the thermometer. They are a stem type with a screw thread just under the dial.
