Using Miter Template
Each McElroy Mitered Insert Set comes with a template
for marking the appropriate cut angle on the pipe.
Wrap template around pipe and secure in place. Start
with the ends of the template coming together at the top
of the pipe.
Refer to the dimensional data pages in the appendix for
fabricating ells. This data shows the requirements for
making mitered segments of an elbow.
As an example, refer to the 90° elbow using 11.250 miter
segments. Using 6" pipe in a No. 28 machine, the data
shows that 3" is a minimum finished dimension for "B".
This segment must be 3" plus an allowance for facing
and fusion. The rougher the pipe is cut, the more
allowance must be made for facing. Beginning personnel
may want to be very generous with this excess allowance
of pipe until they gain experience.
Determine the length of the segment required and find
the holes in the template that offer that length, plus
allowance for facing and fusion.
Use a marking pen and mark through the row of holes all
the way around the pipe on both sides of the template.
NOTICE: The beginning face and the ending face of the
ell are squared off and not mitered.

Marking Pipe for All Segments
Remove the template from the first segment and move
down the pipe to mark the next segment.
Rotate the template 180 degrees, lining up the holes in
the template with the previously marked holes. Secure
with the ends of the template coming together at the
bottom of the pipe.
Continue this procedure until the amounts of segments
required are marked.
